Why A Group, Not Just A Book Or An App
You've already tried thinking your way out of this
Maybe you've read the books. Tried the breathing apps. Watched the YouTube videos. Talked to a friend at 2am. And still - when something hits, the same patterns show up. The same overreactions. The same shutdowns. The same conversations with people you love that don't go the way you wanted.

Skills don't stick from reading. They stick from practicing them with other people, every week, with a therapist who corrects you in real time. That's what these groups do.

How Our Groups Work
Small. Closed. Eight weeks. Same people, every time.
Every group at JumpStart 2 Recovery follows the same proven structure: six to eight adults, one licensed therapist, eight consecutive weeks, one 75-minute session per week. You join on day one and finish on week eight with the same group of people. Nobody drops in mid-cycle.
Why a closed group instead of drop-in? Because skills build. What you learn in week three depends on what you practiced in week two. The trust in the room - the willingness to actually try a new behavior in front of other humans - that takes a few sessions to develop. Drop-in groups don't build that. Closed groups do.

“This group gave me practical tools, not just advice. Learning distress tolerance, mindfulness, emotion regulation, and communication skills in a clear weekly format made everything easier to apply. I appreciated that the sessions were structured, honest, and focused on real progress.”

“The DBT Skills Group helped me feel less alone while learning tools that actually made sense. Practicing with others and talking through real situations each week made the skills easier to remember and use. I left with more confidence in how I handle stress, conflict, and intense emotions.”

Michael T.

“What I appreciated most was how practical the group was. Every week gave me something specific to practice, and by the end of the program I had a clearer way to manage emotions, communicate needs, and get through difficult moments without making things worse.”

Common Questions
Answers before you call
Group therapy at JumpStart 2 Recovery is $50 per 75-minute session, or $40 per session if you prepay the full eight-week cohort. That's $400 prepaid versus $400 paid weekly. We don't bill insurance for groups - payment is due at or before each session.
Every group runs for eight consecutive weeks, with one 75-minute session per week. You start on day one with the same six to eight adults you'll finish with on week eight. Sessions meet at the same day and time each week.
No. You don't need a referral, a diagnosis, or insurance pre-authorization. We do a brief 15-minute phone screening to make sure the group is a good fit, but that's it. The group is open to any adult 18 or older who can commit to the eight-week cohort.
All groups meet in person at our Grand Rapids office: 1345 Monroe Ave NW #269, in the Creston neighborhood. We don't offer virtual or hybrid attendance for groups. The format works because of physical presence - that's not negotiable.
Support groups are typically peer-led - people sharing experience, no clinician in the room. They're valuable, but they're not therapy. Our groups are therapist-led skills training: a Michigan-licensed clinician teaches a specific evidence-based skill set each week, and you practice those skills with structured exercises and homework. You'll walk out with concrete tools, not just shared experience.
Because the cohort is closed and skills build week to week, attendance matters. You can miss one session over the eight weeks without it derailing your progress. If you anticipate missing more than one, we'll suggest waiting for a future cohort that fits your schedule. We don't refund for missed sessions, but we do schedule the next cohort with you for free if attendance becomes a real problem.
No. These are skills groups for adults who are stable enough to commit to eight weeks of weekly attendance and homework. If you're in crisis, the right next step is to call 988 (the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline) or visit your local emergency department. Once stabilized, our groups are an excellent next step - many of our clients come to us after stabilizing elsewhere.
